Use your computer to improve your writing skills
There are a number of resources on your computer and online that will help you become a better writer.
- Your word-processing application will include a dictionary and a thesaurus as well as a spelling and a grammar checker. Using these will help you eliminate basic errors that can make you and your business look unprofessional. But beware, many dictionaries revert to “American English” so ensure yours is set as a default to “British English”.
- Google can be used as a dictionary if you use the expression "Define:" before a word, e.g. "define: fall", within a Google search. Google will look for the definition of the word and examples of use, complete with a list of web links where you can learn more about the word.
- Another free application that you can use is The Sage, which is a thesaurus and dictionary providing you with a wealth of features including Anagram, Antonyms and Synonyms.
- But always get someone to check your work because technology is not perfect and some errors are not recognised by the applications. Your human eye is always best!
